The Challenge

Our society is not equal, and the gap between rich and poor is widening. The UK has one of the highest levels of income inequality in Europe. The Equality Trust report that by 2023, the richest 50 families in the UK held more wealth than half of the UK population.

Meanwhile, National Energy Action estimates that 6.5 million UK households are currently in fuel poverty, unable to afford to heat their homes to the temperature needed to keep warm and healthy. This has grown by 2 million in the 2 years since October 2021.

The cost of living crisis is hitting hard. Stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness are increasing and the most vulnerable are falling through holes in the social safety net.

Our Future Vision

Our communities feel more connected and friendly. Social care is well funded and a Universal Basic Income helps everyone to enjoy a more stable life. People of all abilities, LGBTQIA+ communities, and immigrants are all welcomed. Everyone feels included and accepted in a society that celebrates differences.

The government recognises our rights to a good education, a nice place to live, a meaningful job, good public transportation, and free healthcare. Politicians focus on providing these for everyone. Even though climate change is still a challenge, we saw that doing what’s needed to fix it provided an opportunity to make society more fair, equal, and inclusive.

How we can all make a difference

  • Visit your neighbours, greet people out and about and check on friends and family.
  • Volunteer with an organisation that supports marginalised and vulnerable people.
  • Come into the Climate Hub to meet like-minded people and have a chat.

  • Participate in a Transition Streets course with your neighbours.
  • Join (or start!) a weekly Walk and Talk group in your neighbourhood.
  • Hold a street party or close the street once a month for kids to play out.

  • Implement a Universal Basic Income to ensure all citizens have their basic needs met.
  • Reform immigration law and the asylum system to be more compassionate and dignified.
  • Address the housing crisis so everyone has a safe, affordable place to live.
